Vasil Hadžimanov Band



Vasil’s ideas of mixing Balkan traditional, folk rhythms and melodies with the western, modern musical styles (jazz, funk, world music…) in his own music, is completely authentic and a new approach to fusion and jazz music. It was these ideas that inspired him to form this band, back in 1995, when they made their first recordings and started performing live, for the first time.

In the year of 2001, Vasil Hadzimanov Band released their first CD and tape under the title “11 reasons for…”, published by a major label PGP-RTS. Its first edition sold out in three months. Also for their first release, they won the award “Beovision” 2002 for the Best Debut Album of the Year 2002.

In the summer of 2002 they joined famous director Goran Paskaljevic and his film crew, in making of a documentary about Belgrade, for the ARTE television. Vasil composed the music and the band fronted by their percussionist Bojan Ivkovic, acted and performed music in the movie.

In the year of 2003 they released their second CD “Kafanki”, again published by PGP-RTS. For this one, they won the award “Suncane skale” 2003 for the Best Instrumental Album of The Year 2003.

On 19th of November 2003 VH Band performed on the “Enter Music Festival“ in Belgrade sharing the stage with the great Joe Zawinul and his Zawinul Syndicate. After hearing the band perform live, Zawinul himself invited Vasil and his mates to perform in his new club in Vienna, called "Joe's Birdland", in the spring of 2005.

In June 2004 VH Band were invited by the violin virtuoso Nigel Kennedy to perform with him on his big Belgrade concert. This was quite an experience for both parties involved, as well as for the audience...

In the summer of 2005, the band represented the sounds of the Balkan music on Expo 2005 Aichi, Japan. The concert was a huge success and it was attended by over 3000 people, a record-breaking number of spectators in EXPO-DOME hall until that night.

In November 2005. VHBand performed in Paris (France), taking part in the traditional Jazz Festival of world Cultural Centers “Jazzycolors”.

In 2007 they released their third album entitled “3” (Sega Mu e Majkata) and in 2009 their forth one “Zivota mi”, both published by PGP-RTS.

In 2013 they promoted their fifth album “Can you dig it”- DD release, published by OverJazz Records, Hamburg (Germany) and CD release, published by label Zmex, Belgrade (Serbia).

Also, starting May 2013, all VHBand's albums will be published in digital form by aforementioned company, OverJazz Records, from Hamburg.

2016. They are currently promoting their sixth album „Alive“, first album that they recorded live in five different venues. Their special guest on the record is David Binney, world famous and acknowledged saxophone player and author. This record was released by american publisher MoonJune records from New York.

Every album by VHBand, and every music piece of theirs, was declared in Serbia as artwork of cultural significance for this country.

For the last 15 years, Vasil and his musicians have continuously played their compositions on concerts and jazz,rock and world music festivals all over the world, with big success. Here is the list of some of them:

VASIL HADŽIMANOV / keyboards, piano

Vasil’s (born June 23rd, 1973, Belgrade, Serbia) classical training began at the age of 5, and included attendance at one of the oldest music high schools in South East Europe, Stevan Mokranjac in Belgrade (prof. Ljubinka Hadži- Jovančić).

It was his interest in jazz, however, that won him full scholarship to attend the Interlochen Arts Camp for two summers in a row and afforded him the opportunity to study and perform with Milt Jackson, Curtis Fuller, and Bayron Stripling among others.

He moved to Boston in 1992 to study piano and arranging at Berklee College of Music on a scholarship. He graduated in 1995 and his piano teachers were Ray Santisi and Lazslo Gardony.

While in Boston he had noumerous concerts with the group „Sveti“ (Marko Djordjević and Bato Andonov). He was also a member of a Pascal Bokar’s afro/jazz band, with who he was on a US tour.

In September 1996 Vasil moved to New York, where he continued his work with some of the best young musicians.

At the same time he worked as a music programmer and composer, at the “TOMANDANDY” studios (authors of the “Killing Zoe”, “Natural born killers“... soundtracks. Production-Lou Reed, Leonard Cohen, Laurie Anderson...).

After spending a year in the Big Apple he decided to move back to Serbia and finish what he started with his own VASIL HADZIMANOV BAND. His ideas of mixing Balkan traditional, folk rhythms and melodies with the western, modern musical styles (jazz, funk, world music…)

in his own music, is completely authentic and a new approach to fusion and jazz music.

For the last 15 years, Vasil and his musicians have continuously played his compositions on concerts and jazz festivals all over Europe, Japan and other countries with big success.

In 2011. SJF released Vasil's first piano trio CD, named „El Raval“, which met great acclaim, both with critics and audience.

Since 2011. Vasil is a guest professor and Head of Jazz Piano department at Shtip Music Academy, in Macedonia.

He works in education both privately and at numerous workshops, including The International Project Tutti, in cooperation with Norway Ministry of Culture.

In 2015 he became moderator and host of musical education series “M Lab” on RTV Vojvodina, where he hosts numerous and eminent musical guests, including David Binney, Bojan Zulfikarpašić, Koja, Zafir Hadžimanov, Toni Kitanovski etc.

Same year he started cooperation with Bojan Zulfikarpašić. Two of them, as a piano duo, perform in Belgrade, Novi Sad, Paris, to uniformly superlative accolades from both critics and audience.

In 2016, World Music Association of Serbia and Etnoumlje Magazine released a compilation CD, honoring 25 years of Vasil’s creative work.


2015 – Award of Ministry of Culture and Information, and Ministry of External Affairs – Golden Pin for contribution to culture.

MIROSLAV TOVIRAC / bass guitar

I was born in 1983 in Gradačac (Bosnia and Herzegovina). I was raised and educated in Bosanski Šamac (BiH). Since my father was a musician also (guitar player and producer), I was surrounded by music from an early age. For the last 15 years we have our music studio in Šamac. In that studio I have learned many things by recording and playing different music styles. I play bass guitar (my main instrument), and also drums and guitar. I moved to Belgrade in 2007, where I started to cooperate with many influential people in pop rock, jazz and fusion scene...

BOJAN IVKOVIC / percussion, scat vocal

Bojan Ivković was born in 1975. in Vršac.

He started with drums at an early age and first official appearance was performed with local bands. In 1994. moved to Belgrade, Bojan became the drummer at the most recognized blues band "Hush", whose leader was Ana Popovic. Since 1999. percussion became his main interest and professional commitment and Bojan took part of Vasil Hadžimanov Band as a percussionist. That same year, in collaboration with Pavle Aksentijević and his sons founded a group record. Simultaneously, Bojan played and participated in the recording material with other bands: Sanja Ilić & Balkanika, Havana Whisper, Vroom, Kontrabanda, etc. During his musical creativity, Bojan has performed in numerous national and international jazz and world music festivals, actively participated in creation dozen albums and contributed to many other recording.

Since 2003. Bojan begins an educational and creative work with children. To date, Bojan is the author and performer of many educational programs, actor in several film serials and announcer of a numerous children music festivals.

Bojan plays and rides in Belgrade.


Branko Trijić was borne in Belgrade 1975.

In year 2005 he graduated at Conservatorium van Amsterdam one of the leading European schools for jazz and modern music.

Started playing at the age of 12 at the Traditional folklore ensemble.

He is also the band leader and the composer for his group “Konzilium”. They recorded and published audio CD for a major label PGP -RTS 2007 “Konzilium Live”.

He recorded on over 20 albums as a studio musician for numerous bands and composed music for two documentary movies in the production of “Ministry of educational improvement RS”: "Modro i zeleno" and "Zidovi od stakla"

Attend private classes for jazz drumming with Dušan Ivanišević, and for classical education with Dušan Vrbić.

As young musician, he start playing with members of "Oktava School of Music" in Kragujevac at age of 15. After that he moved to Belgrade and start playing with funk band "Rich Bitch". In Belgrade he met a lot of musicians, and start playing in Ptica Jazz Club.

After a while he became a member of Max Kochetov quartet and Vasil Hadžimanov Band. In Belgrade jazz clubs he was honored to play with Peter Mihelich, David Jarh, Jure Pukl, Milan Nikolić, Predrag Revisin, Vanja Keversan, Sava Miletić...

He became a member of VHBand in September, 2012.




The album “Alive” has been honored as one of top releases of 2016, by the acclaimed USA “DownBeat” Magazine.



This year – 2017, VHBand is celebrating it’s 20 years of existence and work on the music scene.



This February, 2017, VHBand is releasing the album “Alive” as their first record published on vinyl, under the Metropolis Record label from Belgrade, Serbia.
